The Brief

British Wildlife has become a leading natural history magazine in the UK, providing essential reading for both enthusiast and professional naturalists and conservationists. It way for naturalists and wildlife conservationists to keep abreast of new discoveries and the latest trends.

British Wildlife approached us needing a new, more engaging look and feel to their website that would make it easier for new and existing subscribers to navigate their extensive archive and easily access the latest edition of their journal. They were manually uploading content to a bespoke CMS and had no direct way of taking customer payment on the website, so we were tasked with modernising their setup.

What was the process?

We proposed building a new website for BW using WordPress + WooCommerce. We would create a website that:

  • Had an earthy, simple look and feel
  • Integrated with their bespoke content database
  • Connected to their CRM providing customer and order updates
  • Managed digital subscriptions and payments
  • Worked well across different devices

Our Approach

We worked with British Wildlife to create a new visual identity for the website, drawing on existing branding to create a new colour scheme and distinct look and feel, crafting template designs and a style guide for the new user interface.

We ensured that the website sat within a fully automated system pushing new journal content to the website, establishing a new system whereby users could access over 30 years of journal content in PDF form.

Using WooCommerce, we built a subscription system that allowed for a variety of different subscription rates and models, including a bespoke direct debit gateway built to work with their provider, and integration with their CRM, exporting order data and updating orders as they are processed on the CRM.

” It was a pleasure to work with Southmedia on a new website and subscription platform for our magazine, British Wildlife. They were quick to respond to all requests and contributed throughout with ideas for improvements and neat solutions to any challenges that emerged. From start to finish the project felt like a real team effort, and we have been very happy with the end result. “

Outcome and conclusion of the project

In designing and building the website for British Wildlife magazine, we created a clear, user-friendly layout highlighting their commitment to studying and conserving wildlife. It features easy-to-navigate menus, with direct access to the magazine’s current and past issues. The site showcases high-quality images reflecting the focus on nature, including informative articles and conservation news.

Additionally, it provides resources for subscribing to our magazine and exploring further through books and blogs, all dedicated to the diverse wildlife of Britain.

British Wildlife have seen significant uptake in digital-only or print-and-digital subscriptions since launch and we have an ongoing relationship with them iteratitvely developing and improving the platform.
